How does
Kybella work?
Kybella was earlier called ATX-101.
It is a synthetic version of a molecule called deoxycholic acid that is
naturally produced in the intestines for the absorption of dietary fats. When
Kybella is injected into the submental (under the neck) region through a series
of small injections, it targets the fat cells and destroys them. The cells then
become ineffective to store fat. The injection procedure lasts about 15-20
minutes. The amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile
determine the exact number of injections you should take.
For those sensitive to injections,
the area can be numbed to reduce discomfort at the time of procedure. Post the
destruction of these fat cells, your body goes into a slow and steady natural elimination
and healing process. Within 4-6 weeks of receiving Kybella injections,the fat
cells are typically removed from the area, leading up to a younger you.
Number of
Sessions
Every chin profile is different. Your
aesthetic medicine specialist would determine the number of sessions you might
require based on how much submental fat is distributed in the area,and your own
treatment goals. Each session is spaced at least a month apart and one should typically
not require more than six treatments.
How long do results
last?
Results from Kybella injections are
almost permanent which means that your double chin has gone forever. Even if
you gain a little weight after receiving the injections, it may not return
provided you follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain an optimal body weight
range.
You should be 18 years of age and
have a profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin. Before having Kybella,
discuss all your medical conditions with your aesthetic medicine expert. Tell
your provider if you have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck or
chin; have undergone/planning cosmetic treatments on your face, neck or chin;
have had clinical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have
difficulty in swallowing; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are
breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed your baby.
Side-effects
There should be no serious
complications. However, minor discomforts like swelling, pain, numbness and
bruising may be expected as is normal with any cosmetic procedure. Serious problems
are nerve injuries in the jaw that might lead to facial weakness or an uneven
smile and problem in swallowing,all of which are pretty much rare.If you
develop an uneven smile, experience facial muscle weakness or difficulty in swallowing,
do not hesitate to inform your provider.Most people have reported feeling
‘tender’ till about four hours after the procedure. In case of pain, you may
use ice pack, oral analgesics and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory
medications to effectively reduce swelling and pain. It is highly recommended
